Hawaii day 4 [Feb. 13th, 2011|08:59 pm]
Day 4 2/13/11

Today we woke up early and had a hotel breakfast. Right now it is 8:26pm. We went to a Dole plantation thingamambobber. It is a big maze made up of Hawaiian plants. It took us nearly 2 hours. Then we were gonna go to a Polynesian cultural center, but it was closed, so we went to a beach with very rough waves instead. After that we went to a cliff look-out place. Then we went back to the hotel. See you tomorrow on the plane!

We left the hotel at 3:15 to get to the dolphin thing. At 3:45 we got in the water. It was freezing. We learned how to tell the dolphins to jump. Then we went to a Japanese place for dinner. It had pads on the floor instead of chairs. It was pretty good food. I had plain "udon" noodles. Rafe did too. It's 8:00 right now. See you soon bye.

Trip retrospective interview [Jul. 19th, 2010|08:25 pm]
Q: What was the most historically interesting city?
A: Berlin, because of the Wall and the old buildings.

Q: What did you learn about the Wall?
A: There were two walls, so if you crossed one wall, the gunners would see you and shoot you.

Q: Were you in East Berlin or West Berlin?
A: East Berlin.

Q: What was the most relaxing part of the trip?
A: Sleeping.

Q: Which hotel room or other place you stayed was the most comfortable for sleeping?
A: The Berlin hotel room --- we had a lot more space.

Q: What was the yummiest new food that you tried?
A: Chocolate-filled croissant.

Q: Where did you first try that?
A: Paris of course.

Q: What food were you most surprised to like?
A: Homemade raspberry jam. I don't usually like jam.

Q: Who made the raspberry jam?
A: Mom's host-mom Myriam.

Q: What was the yuckiest new food that you tried?
A: Cucumber salad.

Q: Was the prettiest place that you went to?
A: It's hard to say because everywhere was old.

Q: Are old things generally pretty or not pretty?
A: They're rusty, so not exactly pretty.

Q: How many towers or other tall places did you go up?
A: Four different places: Sainte Chapelle, Berlin's synagogue, the Donjon in Pons, and the Eiffel Tower.

Q: If one of your friends were planning a trip to Europe, which sites would you recommend and why?
A: The Eiffel Tower because it's so tall, it's a great view; Jardin du Luxembourg, because it's kid-friendly and tourist-friendly; Sainte Chapelle, because of its cool stained-glass windows; le Donjon in Pons, because of its height; the Madeleine factory, because of the cookies; and last but not least, the Berlin Wall in Berlin, because its coolness.

Q: Sometimes when we travel, it takes time to figure things out that we can do easily at home. Did that happen on this trip? What needed figuring out, and how did we figure it out?
A: The bus. We looked at a map.

Q: Speaking of public transit, which subway system did you like the best, and why?
A: The Paris Metro, because it was so easy to do.

Q: What was harder about the U-Bahn and S-Bahn in Berlin?
A: I didn't get as much practice, because we had 8 more days in Paris.

Q: What about the subway system in Pons?
A: There isn't one, cause it's too small.

Q: Did you learn anything new about yourself on this trip?
A: That I'm better than mom about both Metro systems.

Q: Did you learn anything about being a good traveler?
A: Sort of.

Q: Did you learn any French or German or Icelandic or Danish?
A: Lots of French, not much German, a little Icelandic, and no Danish.

Q: Can you give me some examples of French and German words or phrases that you learned?
A: In French, pain à l'ail means garlic bread. And in German, guten flug means have a pleasant flight.

Q: How did you learn each of those?
A: Listening and looking.

Q: Who were you listening to when you learned pain à l'ail?
A: Mom's host mom.

Q: Why was she talking about pain à l'ail?
A: Cause we had told her that I love it.

Q: Where were you when you learned guten flug?
A: At the airport in Germany.

Q: Did someone say it to you?
A: No.

Q: Then how did you learn it?
A: I saw it on a sign in German and English.

Q: Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, how was this trip?
A: 10 and a half!
